10 Tips for Smoother Shows

When you are a Mobile DJ and have corporate events that may pay the big bucks and want to have the least amount of worries and issues, here are some handy tips to help ensure that your important event goes smoothly.

  1. If you have difficulty creating playlists on the fly or have trouble figuring out what to play next, create premixed sets either stored on CD or within your DJ software. DON'T USE PRE-MIXED CD'S, if you are doing a Club gig. There are others in the club such as scouts or promoters that critique and will definitely notice this if they watch you closely. Also, if you do decide to use premixed sets, take note of what songs were previously played so that you don't accidentally play them again.

  2. Utilize all the cool features provided by your CD Players and/or mixing software such as cueing for "special moments". For example, this would be useful if your clients want an intro of a song but want to skip to the break and pass up the slow intro. Also, this would help learning how to loop an outro to smoothly fade into an intro of the next song.

  3. Bring a wide variety of music! Even though you may hate Swing, Salsa, or Bubble-gum pop music; chances are, your clients may want to hear lots of it. Understanding your clients music tastes prior to the event really helps define the genres and help you scale down your CD / Vinyl catalog.

  4. Take notes of all the issues encountered during your gigs. Then afterwards, take steps to prevent the same problems from occurring in the future.

  5. If you are the M.C. and will be doing all announcements, use Powerpoint as your "teleprompter".

  6. Give yourself an hour extra of set-up time prior to the event. This will allow you to make emergency trips, in case you forgot a cable or if you experience equipment issues during setup.

  7. Test your wireless microphone in all areas of the room to ensure that you will be heard properly. Some areas of a room may make your mic sound really muffled or muddy. Adjust your EQ to the proper levels to balance the frequencies.

  8. Get to know the other parties involved with your client's event. This includes the banquet hall manager, photographers, club managers/supervisors, etc.

  9. Extra cables, cords, cables, & more cords!! Back-up equipment, if available, is also recommended. Don't forget the cords!

  10. Create a First Aid Kit for you AND your equipment. Your first aid kit should be band-aids, aspirin (for those headaches), needle and thread (in case you rip your only pair of slacks), etc. For your equipment's first aid kit, bring Duct Tape (for covering cords), mini-screwdrivers, electrical tape, pliers, cutters, needlenose pliers, soldering gun, and especially adapters for power cords (3-pin ground adapters) and signal adapters for RCA cords.
