1.City of God (Penguin Classics)
from Penguin Classics
Price: $10.88

Customer Review: Rating
It took me about five months of off-and-on reading to slog through City of God--it was time well-spent. Here is one of the rare 1000-page books that not only deserved its length, but could have been longer.
What astounded me about reading St. Augustine was how relevant he is, even after 1600... more info

2.The letters of Abelard and Heloise
from Cooper Square Publishers

Customer Review: Rating
The Letters of Abelard and Heloise is an intense read. It is no doubt true that the staying power of these writings is owing to the soap-opera-like lives of its authors as well as the poetic and romantic language. This collection brings together Abelard's biography written to a friend, "The History... more info

3.Utopia: Thomas More
from Yale University Press
Price: $8.95

Customer Review: Rating
I bought this book because it is a revered "classic". While I am sure More's intent might have been good, and his ideas even acceptable during his time, the main problem with his theory is the lack of freedom allotted to the individuals in his utopia. This sort of thing just does not fly these days.

4.The Consolation of Philosophy: Revised Edition (Penguin Classics)
from Penguin Classics
Price: $10.20

Customer Review: Rating
The Lady Philosophy appeared to Boethius in a vision while Boethius was in prison for political crimes. This book, while highly entertaining, set the stage for medieval philosophy. Among others, St Thomas Aquinas would be in constant conversation with Boethius.
The first section contains a... more info

5.Medieval Philosophy (Philosophic Classics, Volume II - 3rd Edition)
from Prentice Hall

Customer Review: Rating
I don't usually like anthologies and rarely teach from them -- I tend to prefer a primary text approach, partly because it allows students to see the development of ideas in their full context and because I expect philosophy students to be interested in developing their personal library of... more info

7.The Guide of the Perplexed
from Hackett Publishing Company
Price: $8.95

Customer Review: Rating
Maimonides is one of those authors whose works should not be edited. The whole thing or nothing.
Guide is not simply a collection of Rabbinic opinions from the time of AKIBA more or less. M-Torah is much more of that sort than Guide.
There is a line from Akiba through Maimonides to Spinoza... more info

8.Confessions
from Hackett Publishing Company
Price: $29.95

Customer Review: Rating
Sheed's translation of this classic of Western and Christian culture is truly beautiful. He went beyond presenting an accurate translation; beyond a clear translation. He gave us a translation that is accurate, clear, and sonorous. The footnotes, introductions (one by famous Augustine scholar Peter... more info

10.Classics of Philosophy
from Oxford University Press, USA

Customer Review: Rating
Whether as a collection of various primary texts, or as a textbook for an intro to philosophy class, making students shell out fifty-four bucks for this is a mistake. Like two other reviewers said, this text offers nothing useful but the primary texts. Since that is the case, the only question that... more info
